It was Heritage's big Homecoming this past weekend. "Homecoming on the Homefront: The 1940s."
Ben had an amazing game. Tackles, sacks, fumbles, receptions, carries--you name it, he did it.
I love this shot--Ben (5) and McKay (16) hustling into position on the offensive line.
The best story of the weekend, however, doesn't center around football. Oh, no.
At halftime, each class presented the banner they had made as part of the Homecoming celebration, and then it was time to announce Homecoming royalty.
I already knew that Ben's date, Taryn, was the queen and that his best buddy, McKay, was the king, so I set up my camera to take pictures. Coach sent Ben down to the track, and he sprinted across the field. He was confused why he was sent down there, and I thought it must have been to escort his date to the Homecoming court.
Here they are, both looking a little confused. He actually walked her across, and then McKay joined her for pictures.
The next morning, I discovered that a mistake had been made, and instead of McKay being voted Homecoming King, BEN had actually won, and the votes had not all been turned in when the final announcement was made. Now what to do?
Taryn and McKay kept it a secret all day and through the dance until the announcement was made. The teacher stepped to the mike and said, " blah, blah, blah, . . . . something has happened that has never happened before, blah, blah, blah, . . . and I hope that there will be some good sports tonight. The Homecoming King and Queen for 2013 are Taryn Randall and Ben Denton!"
I'm so mad, because I actually crashed the dance in order to video Ben's reaction, and my SD card failed while we were transferring the images so I don't have video of his acceptance and their first dance. McKay was really funny, because he put on a show of being disappointed and mad, then hugged his buddy and pushed Ben forward. It was kinda awesome, not gonna lie about it. Both boys were good sports, and it will be one for the record books, I'm sure--one king crowned at the game, another crowned at the dance. Only time I've ever heard of it happening!
I'll be posting pictures of the dinner and the dance tomorrow, but here is a shot of the queen and (unbeknownst to him) king that night:
I love that their school can sponsor a themed dance and that the kids will all dress for the occasion. 40's dresses, hair and lipstick. High-waisted pants, bow ties and suspenders. It was so fun.
More tomorrow. I have two assignments due today, one of which was actually due on Saturday. Stupid me. I never do that. I hope the professor is forgiving . . .

Cute, aren't they? This is not the end of the story, however.

ReplyDeletecongrats to Ben! Sorry about the sd card snafu!
Bummer about the card! I didn't realize it was sort of a costume dance, what a fun idea. Great football shots. Congratulations to the King!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Ben! Kinda fun the way it went down, too.
