We had the wild hair to take all the turkeys and climb to the Wind Caves at Usery Pass before Thanksgiving dinner.
I carried the eighteen-pounder up and back--3 miles round-trip. It was hilarious to listen to her babble almost the entire way. Totally good. Totally happy to be in the backpack.
The middle turkeys did well. Micah did the whole hike, Hyrum had to be carried by Dad a lot of the way, but there was little complaining.
Why does coming down always go faster but seem slower? Evie finally gave out with about thirty minutes to go. Ben and Lily beat us to the Suburban by about thirty minutes. The two turkeys scoured the entire car for food, almost breaking into a fistfight over a package of cashews and a few broken graham crackers.
And it took us a lot longer overall than we thought. This caused a slight amount of panic at home when we were late starting our food assignments for the feast. How did we cope?
We enlisted every pair of hands. Even his.
And he actually was very helpful. He pulled apart all the grapes and scooped all the bananas onto the plate. That's me in the foreground, scraping over-softened butter off the microwave plate.
Hope your Thanksgiving was great!
I really wonder where you get all your energy! You did all hiking with Evie on your back no less, plus had the T-dinner and got up in the middle of the night and did HOURS of shopping!
ReplyDeleteYes where do you get all that energy from?? The view does look spectacular though. Glad your family does things like this. We did it all the time we were growing up. Mostly because we didn't have a lot of money. But I think I had a great childhood!~Ames
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great Thanksgiving to me! All present and accounted for - just the way it should be.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great day. Glad everyone made it back safe and sound with good appetites!
ReplyDeleteThat was a great idea! Then you can eat all the pie you want :) (And it looks like it was great entertainment for the kiddos!)
ReplyDeleteNice. A pre Thanksgiving hike. Not that anyone in your family needed the calorie deficit, but at least you all got one. Wish I had done something useful with myself like that. Instead, I just ate a lot of mashed potatoes.
ReplyDeleteJust think, now you really did have a reason to crash on the couch after dinner...besides the food. Glad it was a great family day!
ReplyDeleteLove those babbling sounds from the carrier...although lately mine have been cries of "let me out of here"...in baby language of course!!:)
ReplyDeleteWish our weather would have allowed for a little Thanksgiving walk! Looks totally fun!!
Enjoy the day,
Cindy
Oh my...that is your family in the middle of the desert.
ReplyDeleteJust the way I pictured it. Sooo very cool.
What a great day!
I miss Arizona...
ReplyDeleteYou amaze me. If I had taken a hike like that I wouldn't have been able to make it through the Thanksgiving dinner task, too.
ReplyDeleteJen Denton, Wonder Woman.
=D
Although you are Wonder Woman, I strongly advise against the popularly recognized Wonder Woman costume, because honestly seeing my mother in that would surely cause me some sort of psychological malady discovered by Sigmund Freud.
ReplyDeleteI really want to visit Arizona!! Can I come visit you?? Love these pictures!!
ReplyDeletevery ambitious!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your beautiful family ;-)
ReplyDeletewhat a great day.... that 18 pounder is darn cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat a very fun thing to do and perfect before Thanksgiving dinner!
ReplyDeleteI love hiking and wish I could do it in the winter like you guys down there in Arizona, especially since I do not ski anymore.
The pictures are great!
Nice that you have so many great helpers. I love all of them.
ReplyDeleteHow fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks for voting on our Christmas card pics. Hubby likes the pic of the entire family...me, I really don't care to send a pic of myself to everyone! :) I'm with you...number 6 puts a smile on my face.
So much fun- that's a great idea. What I want to know is how you had the energy to get up at O'dark thirty and go shopping? You're like the energizer bunny.
ReplyDeleteWow, all that hiking before your Thanksgiving meal? You're probably the first person I've known this year to have not spend the whole day cooking for the feast! You guys did look like you had a lot of fun though :) By the way, what is that backpack carrier you used with Evie? She's sitting pretty high up back there!
ReplyDeleteFun!!!
